The Heber Springs Humane Society was chartered as a non-profit organization August, 1983. Our purpose in general is to provide shelter, food and loving care to unwanted animals and to prevent all forms of cruelty to animals by: Humane Education and prosecution of those violating animal cruelty laws. We also work hard with the city and county to upgrade existing laws and help to introduce new legislation for more humane treatment of animals.
We opened the Virginia L. Harrison Animal Shelter July, 1987. The name is a memorial to the wife of Mr. Harrison who donated the money that enabled us to purchase the land and construct our old shelter.
As of August 2007, Our new shelter opened on the same property. Our dogs now have indoor out runs. Our cats have a very nice new building as well. We are currently in the process of building another cat room and an enclosed dog park where our canines can get some exercise.
We make every effort to adopt our animals into loving, forever homes. However over population of pets is a continuous problem, therefore pets that are unadoptable or cannot find homes must be humanely euthanized.
We also operate a Thrift Shop to sell used items of clothing and general household items. Money earned from this effort helps to fund our shelter. The Thrift Shop is located at 104 S. 4th St. in Heber Springs. Along with the Thrift Shop. We also have a Groomer in a separate building. She is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday 9:00-4:30 p.m.
